Martha Jackson Oral History Project

The Martha Jackson Oral History Project is an ongoing effort to situate this single biographical figure in rich context. The Oral History Project interviews focus on gathering information on four main topics.

  1. Martha Jackson as a biographical figure.
  2. The networks of people connected to Martha Jackson.
  3. The art-historical importance of the art careers and trends Martha Jackson supported.
  4. The role of Martha Jackson and her gallery in New York’s art market of the 50s and 60s.

The Oral History Project’s series of in depth interviews with Martha Jackson’s artists, employees, colleagues, family and friends will provide an information base for the first portrait of this influential woman and the ways in which she used the market to promote the cause of modern art in this country.
